What are the digital humanities, and how do I plan to answer that question in project form?

What are the digital humanities?

This very loaded question was posed by my teacher, Dr. Jesse Stommel at the beginning of the current term. In preparing for my final project, I have asked myself this question numerous times with varying answers. It finally occurred to me that maybe I was over-thinking something that was really very simple.

So here is my answer: Digital Humanities is the study of the human experience within the confines of and employing the digital realm.

Going forward then, my project idea in response to this definition is going to take on the form of a video highlighting some of the most important digital work, as well as some of the most irritating things the digital has to offer. I have spent a lot of time playing around with every app. the iPad has to offer. I have worked fairly seriously with everything from iMotion HD to bitstrips to infinite canvas trying to decide on the best medium for my project. I will probably employ a few of these apps, but will work mostly in iMovie after watching quite a few online tutorials that have given me some helpful hints.

Some of the incredible works that I want to highlight from the term will obviously be Underbelly and Out of Touch by Christine Wilks. Some of the things that are slightly less inspiring that I will touch on are things like Some E-Cards which are nothing more than digital backhanded compliments, or the poke button on Facebook – because though virtual pokes aren’t as irritating as the real thing, who really wants to be poked?

The digital is a veritable Cave of Wonders with both good and bad around every corner and I really want to show that with mindful use, only the best things are possible. Any suggestions or ideas for things to include would be greatly appreciated. Stay tuned for the real thing, which I will post here in about a week!

  1. Really love your idea to combine several apps in your work. An investigation of the digital humanities becomes a critical investigating of the human and the tools we use to investigate the human. On tenterhooks to see what you come up with.
